Operating Rules and Regulations for the Cemetery

1.   Lots may be purchased from the appropriate officers of Riley Township Trustees.

2.   The standard size for a single lot is four feet by twelve feet.

3.   Purchasers of burial lots will receive a deed to indicate their right to be buried there. This includes rights of family members as well. No lots may be sold or exchanged without the authorization of the Township.

4.   Expenses incurred from burial shall not be the responsibility of the Township.

5.   Excess earth from the grave and foundation must be removed from the gravesite by the persons doing the installation.

6.   Foundation or monuments for deceased veterans may accommodate a holder for a memorial flag.

7.   No round up/glyphosate is permitted.

8.   The Township is not responsible for vandalism or damage inflicted upon graves or markers.

9.   No foot markers or boundary markers such as fence enclosures around lots will be permitted. Shepherd hooks, stones, shells, toys, boxes, etc. shall not be scattered upon graves (danger to mowers).

10. Foundations for monuments must be appropriate to the size of the monument.

11. The Township recommends that foundations for monuments and the monuments be installed as close as possible to April 15 (spring installation) or to November 15 (fall installation) while taking into consideration the weather and condition of the Cemetery grounds.

12. No more than the remains of one body shall be interred in one grave without special permission for cremains.

13. No mausoleum or sarcophagus will be permitted in the grave sections as now plotted.

14. Unusual inscriptions on monuments and/or unusual monuments themselves must be approved by the Township Trustees.

15. Only human remains, no pets, may be buried in the cemetery.

16. The Township must grant permissions for any exhumation. Laws governing exhumation must be strictly followed. Financial responsibility does not rest with the Township.

17. Cut flowers placed on graves should be secured in stable containers on or as close to the foundation as possible.

18. The Township is not responsible for theft or damage to floral pieces, plants, or containers placed in the Cemetery.

19. Plotted plants should also be placed on the foundation or as close to it as possible. No holes should be dug and no sod removed. Rocks, pebbles, or other articles that could damage mowers should not be used.

20. Shrubs, trees, vines, etc. should not be planted in the Cemetery unless special permission has been obtained from the Township Trustees.

21. Artificial flowers must be secured or a close-fitting saddle arrangement may be selected. Persons placing them on graves are encouraged to remove them when they become faded or otherwise deteriorated. The Township reserves the right to dispose of them when they blow onto other graves or appear untidy.

22. By November 1 all patrons are asked to remove decorations and containers (those not permanently fixed) from the graves, except for grave blankets. Grave blankets are the responsibility of the patrons.

23. The Township reserves the right to approve any requests for Ceremonial Burials. Examples of such burials include those of missing persons whose bodies are not retrievable, persons whose bodies are buried elsewhere and wish to inform others of their location, and those who have been cremated and their ashes not inurned in the Cemetery.

24. The Township will do its best to maintain a beautiful, peaceful Cemetery and encourage visitors to feel welcome.
